Making a resolution to lose weight in the New Year is a simple undertaking. But sticking with your resolution and disregarding the volumes of false, counterproductive diet advice out there can be exponentially more difficult.
Each year millions of Americans resolve to lose their added holiday pounds – and then some – using a variety of fad diets and quick fixes. A web poll in 2004 found that roughly 30 percent of these same Americans often give up on their New Year’s resolutions before the end of February.
This may be due to the fact that many people get carried away while making New Year’s resolutions and try to commit to more than they can manage. If you catch yourself pledging to lose 20 pounds by Valentine’s Day, run a Marathon on June 1st and never touch another breadbasket, candy bowl or alcoholic drink again, stop and re-examine your goals. Ask yourself if you are setting the stage for failure. Sensible resolutions should not include fad diets, unhealthy amounts of exercise or a commitment to complete shift in your lifestyle.
